From January 17th (Fri), the special exhibition “KABUKI MUSEUM 2025 ~What is Kabuki?~” will be held at the Kabukiza Gallery located on the 5th floor of the Kabukiza Tower.

Kabuki is one of Japan’s most representative traditional arts, and over its 400 year history it has fostered a performance culture that is unique in the world. The Kabukiza Theatre, located near Ginza and Tsukiji, is a theatre dedicated to kabuki which attracts visitors from across the globe throughout the year.

The exhibition includes explanations that will enable visitors to deepen their understanding of the history, repertoire and the unique performance conventions of kabuki. Precious ukiyo-e woodblock prints and books, which are not usually available to the public, will be put on display during the exhibition.

There will also be a collection of exhibits based on the theme of ‘Kabuki Experience’, and in the hall attached to the gallery, visitors will be able to see up close some of the actual props and costumes used on the kabuki stage. A special photo booth of the ‘Torii-mae’ scene from the famous “Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura” will also be set up, and visitors can put themselves in the role and enjoy taking photos.

The exhibition will be accompanied by explanatory notes in English and Japanese. Furthermore, multilingual guides can be accessed by scanning QR codes placed around the venue with your smartphone. Please stop by after watching a performance at the Kabukiza Theatre, or while strolling around Ginza!
